Going off to college can be an overwhelming (yet exciting!) experience- classes, greek life, clubs, councils, social life, and more! You may wonder if it is worth your time to commit to being a cheerleader during this time of your life. Below are the top 5 reasons Emory University Cheer believes that it is COMPLETELY worth your time!
#1 Forever Second Family!
Moving to a new city, state, or even a new country, can make it tough to reach out and meet new friends. As an Emory Cheerleader you will spend a lot of time with your teammates. Through practices, games, competitions and extracurricular events you will form a bond with your teammates that will last all four years!
#2 Step Up Your Skills!
Moving onto the collegiate level means advancing and learning new skills! Whether it’s stunting, striving for specific tumbling passes, or even sharpening up already learned skills, you will be stepping up your game and taking your skills to a whole new level. Emory cheer began competing in competitions last year and will continue to push to reach the next level of athletic performance!
#3 Get those A’s!
Personal growth and development are the main reasons we choose to go to college. This experience is once in a lifetime, and choosing to cheer can be a big responsibility. Academic assistance can help ease the stress when classes get tough. Study halls and tutors can offer a lot of support and make those difficult classes easier to manage, especially when you have a hectic schedule on your plate. As an Emory Cheerleader you will be required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
#4 Role Model!
Being a positive role model is one of the most rewarding experiences when you become a collegiate cheerleader. Children of all ages will look up to you and dream of someday being in your shoes. What could be better than having a little girl dressed in her uniform come up after a game to say they want to be a cheerleader just like you?
#5 Connected to the Community!
Having the opportunity to volunteer as part of the team is a really fun way to give back to the community. Emory cheerleaders volunteer at different events throughout the year; whether it’s cleaning up the campus or helping out at a special event, giving back is a big part of being an Emory Cheerleader.
#6 More Motivation & Support!
A team provides motivation not only to be the best cheerleader, but to also be the best student athlete. Practices provide built-in daily physical activity and helps promote a healthy lifestyle. Teammates can also give that extra push to keep grades up and maintain a good GPA.
#7 Get Ready For the “Real World”
Responsibility, time management, reliability, and confidence are just a few of the characteristics that are required to make it in the “real world.” Cheerleading in college not only helps you to grow as an individual and cheerleader, but also as a professional getting you ready for that next step in life. Between practices, games, hours of homework, papers, exams, greek life, jobs, etc.sometimes it can be hard to find that balance. Being part of a team means you have a built in support network that you can depend on when you are stressed (as well as an outlet for stress release - practice!).
